Decadence, Transcendence
Valentine Muller (Université Paris Nanterre)
Sediments Festival

Decadence, Transcendence examines the often paradox relationship between lgbtq+ people and their spiritualities. Drawing on testimonies and the aesthetics of ritual and symbolism, the solo performance aims to open a debate on the thoughts and experiences of queer people with regard to spiritualities and on the place of spirituality in contemporary society. The artist’s own experience as a Christian lesbian woman inspired in her the wish to create a social and artistic space able to address these issues, but also build a precious sanctuary for reflection, remembrance, relief, care, celebration and reaffirmation.

“The great deal of care and delicacy that Decadence, Transcendence employs in addressing questions surrounding faith and spirituality and their relationship with queer sexuality render it a nuanced and exciting point of departure for any exploration into the different institutions that fashion what we consider to be intimate and constitutive elements of ourselves.”
