Marat – Die Geschichte einer Revolution:oder die Menschheit erkrankt an sich selbst
A play by Tobias Hahnefeld
Very loosely based on „The Freedom to Be Free” by Hannah Arendt
The story begins with the painting “The Death of Marat” by Jacques-Louis David, 1793, oil on canvas, 162 x 128 cm. The work reads like the scene of a murder: the stab wound in the chest, the bathtub full of blood, the murder weapon on the floor, and the confession letter in his left hand.
But how did the murder come about?
The production takes David's pictorial work as its starting point and transposes it onto the stage. The result is an interplay between the different dimensions of painting and theatrical space. To answer the question of the murder, the audience's attention is directed towards the two main characters, Jean Paul Marat and Charlotte Corday.
The central motif of the production is the feminization of space: that is, in the interpretation of the performance, the appropriation of political space by the character of Charlotte Corday. The play moves between the political, social, and personal-individual spaces of the characters. In doing so, it becomes clear how the image of the female body is culturally coded.
And, of course, it is about power, arbitrary rule, violence, war, madness: because, after all, it is a play about the revolution.
Sensory and Content Notes:
The production deals with themes of violence, aggression, and murder. This involves the occasional use of blood, shouting, darkness, and strobe lighting.
