GELDVORSTELLUNG: Un-Sichtbarkeiten der Geldschöpfung
A talk between science and art
VOLL:MILCH
"Money makes the world go round," Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli sing in the musical Cabaret, and who would disagree? But amidst cash, bank deposits, central bank reserves, Eurodollars, stocks, derivatives, government bonds, gold, fiat -, and cryptocurrencies, the question arises: what exactly is this money that drives the world? And above all: How, where, and by whom is this money created?
By examining popular images, ideas, and stagings of money, we examine the functioning of our modern monetary system and the invisibility associated with it. What is the special privilege of commercial banks creating money, and what does it reveal about the connection between banks and the state? What influence do money markets have on political agency, and what does the offshore financial market have to do with it?
Together with experts from political science, economics, sociology, and the arts, we bring the monetary system to the stage to illuminate its historically evolved, sociopolitical dimensions, critically examine them, and create new visibility.
