_Static_!
Bálint Barabas Szigeti
A walk-in performance
static [ˈstatɪk]:
Adjective:
- lacking in movement, action, or change, especially in an undesirable or uninteresting way
- forces in equilibrium.
Noun: - an electrical charge of materials when they are rubbed.
- noise, magnetic interference
This performance/dance presentation draws inspiration from television static—the ever-shifting patterns on the screen caused by the absence of a clear signal.
"I once came across a poetic interpretation that resonated with me: what you can see as television static -since the antenna does not filter, while receiving it- is basically everything, life in its purest unprocessed form", Bálint Barabas Szigeti explains. With no fixed input, we are left with constant change—the natural ebb and flow of existence.
This idea perfectly encapsulates the meaning behind our production's name. ‘Static’ represents stillness and endless movement simultaneously.
The central question posed in this performance is: How can a space be created that receives signals but is still in its double meaning. It doesn’t dictate how they should be interpreted, and because of that its invites constant reinterpretation and offers endless possibilities. How can such a space could bring forth the constant movement (dance) of life, and the rules which govern social interaction?
"_Static_!" is part of a transnational artistic research project as part of the "Master's program Comparative Dramaturgy and Performance Research", investigating the basic questions of togetherness.
