HTA Postgraduate Grants for Artistic Research (2021)
A Frankfurt LAB project for Alumni of Hessian Theatre Academy, supported by the Hessian Ministry for Science and Culture
Also in 2021, Frankfurt LAB – Space and Time for Contemporary Production – awards grants for artistic projects that are committed to artistic research. Thus, Frankfurt LAB wishes to support alumni of Hessian Theatre Academy as well as innovative projects of single persons or groups, which cannot be easily produced within the traditional theater and funding system. Several projects will receive between 2000 € and 6000 €. The grants are associated with the residency program at Frankfurt LAB. In addition to the financial support we try to provide workspace at the LAB if available. However, costs for workspaces, if needed. should be included in the financial planning.
The grants are open to alumni holding BA, MA or PhD-Degrees from any of the HTA programs (Dramaturgie, Schauspiel, Regie, Angewandte Theaterwissenschaft, Bühnenbild/Szenischer Raum, Tanz, Choreographie und Performance, Contemporary Dance Education, Theater- und Orchestermanagement, Gesang/Musiktheater). Applications on behalf of groups must be submitted by an alumnus or an alumna of the HTA (other group members do not need to be affiliated with the HTA). Currently enrolled students are not eligible to apply.
The materials listed below must be received by March 31st, 2021.
I. A concept paper that describes the aims of the artistic research project, which could also be a part of a bigger project, as well as its approach to the following three stages (please include a time schedule):
What are the strategies of your artistic research? How will you examine your subject of research? Which resources do you intend to use?
How and in what kind of context do you intend to present your research process and its outcome to the public? (A presentation in Frankfurt is strongly encouraged.)
What form of documentation is adequate for your research project? How could the research and the presentation be documented and archived? Which conventional and unconventional media of documentation could be used?
II. A budget plan listing all expected expenses (such as your own fee or costs of supplies) as well as any additional funding for the project (at hand or pending).
Frankfurt LAB and HTA want especially to support projects and ideas that are not compatible with the producing or researchs methods oft he existing theater or academic institutions. We also want to encourage the application of projects and ideas that reflect about institutional production and research methods in a critical way, and of projects that deal with artistic forms also for young audiences, as well of site-specific working methods.
The materials listed must be received by March 31st, 2021. Please submit all materials (in German or English) to the following address:
