HANS oder das Märchen vom Glück
(HANS or the fairy tale of luck)
Ramón Jeronimo Wirtz
From time to time being happy seems like a modest aspiration for one's existence. Yet, statistically speaking, high life satisfaction is linked to a multitude of privileges. The closer one approaches the concept of happiness, the more it blurs and fragments into the most diverse facets of what can be associated with positivity. Generations, biographical backgrounds, and cultural narratives shape our idea of what kind of happiness is even worth striving for. And what if everything is perfect and the feeling of happiness still eludes us?
Based on one of the oldest Western stories on this topic, the fairy tale of "Hans im Glück" (Hans in Luck), director Ramón Jeronimo Wirtz, together with the performer Hannah Lindner and the singer Mascha Melts, explores the multifaceted nature of an emotion that connects discourses on capitalism and mental health. In the fairy tale, Hans cheerfully and naively trades everything he has, until he has nothing left. To what extent does this speak to us today in our exploration of happiness?
