Open Call: Frankfurt LAB Residencies 2020

Frankfurt LAB is offering two residency periods in 2020. You can apply for one of these periods:
2nd of June until 28th of June 2020 and 26st of July until 23rd of August 2020

The Frankfurt LAB is a rehearsal and performance space for experimental work in the performing arts and music with two performance halls. Its’ partners Ensemble Modern, Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, Hessische Theaterakademie, Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst and Künstlerhaus Mousonturm share the artistic responsibility.

Since 2014 the Frankfurt LAB is hosting an annual residency program. The residency is meant for artists from every discipline and is looking for nation and international participants. A collaboration with local based artist is explicitly welcomed.

It offers a month’s worth of time for research, prepare and progress of artistic work in one of the given rehearsal spaces. The big hall of Frankfurt LAB is offered (divided in two studios, leaving about 300 square meters per studio). The hall is equipped with a stage floor and a lighting rig. The walls are in a light color, but with an all-round curtain system the hall can be transformed into a black box. The technical basic equipment of the hall includes lighting and audio equipment. There are also other smaller rooms in Frankfurt LAB, a kitchen, showers and artists wardrobe.

A residency means not only having a rehearsal space, but also technical equipment (as much as is available), technical assistance, as well as financial help for the needed material. Other than the help of the permanent staff, the artists are offered two shifts to work with technicians to optimize their technical setup.
The grant is 1400 Euro for each of a maximum of 2 people of a group, partly also travel and accommodation costs (Frankfurt LAB has no own artist-flats – the accommodation has to be organized independent, Frankfurt LAB can give support). There is also the possibility to apply with lager groups - in this case the fee has to be shared between the participants.

The research work should be introduced to the public at the end of the residency period. The presentation shall not so much present a finished work, but rather enable the residents to take up a reflective attitude towards their research in Frankfurt LAB.

The applicants are asked to provide some information about their research project, about the motivation to apply and some video links to recent works. An additional project description can be, but doesn't have to be added (per pdf file, via email). The decision for or against applications will be made by one representative jury of the partner institutions.

Please send your application until the 07th of January 2020 to residencies@frankfurt- Applications later than the 07th of January 2020 can’t be considered. Please send any further questions also to: The applicants will be informed about the juries’ decision mid of February 2020.
